Mounia

Not much is reported about this beauty except that she was born on the island of Martinique and that she was the first black model to be hired by Yves Saint Laurent. "The Muse" as she was called, was actually discovered by Count Hubert James Marcel Taffin de Givenchy and persuaded her to move to Paris. Being YSL's muse, Mounia became the first black runway model to showcase Haute Couture. After her success at YSL, Mounia graced the covers of Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and Essence magazine to expand her career as a successful black model. Today, she works as an abstract painter and credits Mr. Laurent for putting her in front of the camera for the world to accept black skin in high fashion.

Mounia, pioneer in haute couture.
