Sarah Vaughan
Sarah Lois Vaughan was born in Newark, New Jersey on March 27, 1924. She was rumored to be an immediate star after winning Ameteur Night at the Apollo. She also became interested in music and explored it in the streets of Newark at places like the "Picadilly Club", in which she was legally too young to even be in, let alone perform. Dropping out of Newarks Arts High School, the first magnet high school in the US to concentrate more on her music, Sarah was soon recognized as having one of the most wonderous voices and actually made what was considered traditional "pop" music. Recording and critical success led to numerous performing opportunities, packing clubs around the country almost continuously throughout the years of the late 1940s and early 1950s. Her commercial success peaked in 1959 with "Broken Hearted Melody", which became her first gold record and a regular part of her concert repertoire for years to come. After taking a break to find "love"(whatever that is/??/), she started to record again in the early 70's but never quite could agree on the direction of her management and music. Later negotiating a deal with Pablo Records, Sarah put out several new material from the late 70's to early 80's. Arguably the first to interfuse different genres of music, Sarah didn't like to be categorized as a "Jazz singer". Given the name "The Divine One", Sarah continued to perform around the world until her death caused by lung cancer on April 3, 1990. Being honored with many awards including two honors in the Grammy Hall of Fame and the NEA Jazz Masters Award, Ms. "Sailor" or "Sassy", in which she was sometimes called, was a leader in helping African American music crossover.
